MAIN ARTIST: Sonic Skillz
CATALOG NUMBER: URB-011
Rent Money brings together Sonic Skillz‘s instrumental hip-hop and R&B sensibilities with lo-fi textures and a noticeable influence from 1980s music. Released in 2023, the EP blends laid-back rhythms, warm synthesizers, and melodic arrangements, exploring a range of sounds while keeping groove and atmosphere at the forefront. The title comes from a simple goal: making some good music and hopefully earning a little rent money in the process.
The EP opens with The Party Don’t Stop, combining Sonic Skillz’s familiar hip-hop and R&B production style with an unmistakable ’80s flavor. Tracks like Lost in Thought and After Midnight lean into more reflective, late-night moods, while the closing ‘Til the Sun Comes Up blends smooth R&B with synthwave influences and live saxophone, bringing a different musical dimension to the collection.
With its mix of mellow grooves, retro influences, and contemporary production, Rent Money offers a varied but cohesive listening experience. It’s a collection that gives Sonic Skillz room to experiment with different styles while maintaining the melodic approach and rhythmic foundation that run throughout his work.
